publication date: Nov 28, 2018

This shortfall has placed an enormous strain on the price of helium, driving it up to an all-time high this year to $279 per thousand cubic feet. This represents an 11% increase over 2017. This trend is likely to continue into 2020, where the value of the helium market could exceed $1.5 billion.

The federal government, which sets helium prices, announced in April 2012 that helium prices would spike from $75.75 per thousand cubic feet (Mcf) in FY 2012 to $84 per Mcf in FY 2013. (Last year in 2012, prices rose only 75 cents.) Currently in 2018 helium prices are at $279 per thousand cubic feet (Mcf) and rising.
